Wisdom Woman, Elderwoman, Crone
Custodian Of Female Power
Part One

Written & Illustrated By Roslyne Sophia Breillat

Where is she, this Crone, this Elderwoman, this joyous wild woman of wise spirit and fathomless depth, this serenely sacred woman who peacefully holds her wise blood inside with such integrity and grace? What has the patriarchal world done with her and to her, where is she hiding, where is she abiding, this moment, right now? Where is her natural place within this male-dominated world that is so rapidly and rampantly destroying itself through raping and plundering her ancient Earth Mother’s womb?

Not so very long ago, before the invention of tiny cramped granny flats and billion dollar aged care homes, this older woman was everywhere, strolling along the streets, sitting in the parks, tending her fires, sweeping her hearth, telling her stories, welcoming the children, gathering her herbs and flowers, singing her hymns. She lived and died in the peace-filled comfort of her family home, where many generations had lived and died before her. Where is her home now, where are her gardens, her stories, her sisters, her songs? Where is the vibrant fire of her belly, where is the profound wisdom of her womb? Where is her wise female power? Where is her sacred place upon this beautiful Earth?

For I have seen her lying there, dying there, for many long, long, sad and lonely days and nights in the aged care home, asking questions about death, smiling sweetly when fragrant flowers from her beloved garden are placed in a vase beside her, and weeping because she has never known peace. I have seen what becomes of her when she is taken from her beautiful gardens, when she has forsaken her nurturing hearth and home, when she can no longer inhale the fragrance of her perfumed flowers or hold her dear husband’s hand, or feel the golden sunshine upon her skin, or chat with her dear neighbours over the old wooden fence. I have seen her brittle starving bones, and the way that too many toxic medications transformed her once thick blonde curls into dry stringlike wisps framing her lifeless, death-beckoning face. I have seen what all the pharmaceutical drugs have done to her body, her spirit, her soul. I have seen these toxic drugs legally poison her tiny frail form and prevent her from eating and drinking, and I have seen them steal her last breath and prevent her kind heart from beating. I have seen her innocent sweetness, I have seen her offering gifts of majestic proteas from her garden, handfuls of golden coins from her tapestry purse, perfumed posies of pansies and violets and daisies and roses, grown with her loving hands.

For she, like so many other beautiful older women were not given a chance to shine as the sacred Elderwoman, as the sacred Crone, to feel the vibrant fire in their bellies, the deep passion in their wombs, for the patriarchy has deemed them useless, old, unnecessary, a burden, a profit-making business that does not allow their bodies to live and die naturally. For the patriarchy has falsely promised them that if they dyed their beautiful silvery hair and covered their soft wisdom wrinkles and coloured their faces until they looked like little painted dolls, then they would be honoured, acknowledged and seen.

She has so many wise offerings to give, she has such profound purpose, this beautiful woman of her sacred menopausal years and beyond, this Elderwoman, this Crone. But sadly, the patriarchy doesn’t want her, and yet, it unknowingly needs her so very much during this destructive phase of the Kali Yuga, as her children and her grandchildren need her, as her tribe and her community need her, as the seasonal cycles of her beloved Earth need her, as life so very dearly needs her. As all need her.
