Fifty Years of Justine and Susun

Once we made the move from city to country, we moved. After a winter with kerosene heat, I was thrilled to move to Band Camp Road, named, I was told, after John Phillip Sousa’s summer band camps. As an accordion player, I was quite familiar with many of his marches and thought it cool to live on his road. Three seasons later, after another winter, we moved again, this time into the woods, up a mountain. On the other side of the mountain, the Woodstock Festival was happening. On our side, Justine and I spent our days with mushrooms, devas, and fairies.

High Mount – Calico cat stops for a moment to play with Justine and Susun. We are by one of the two streams you had to ford to get to the cabin on High Mount.    (Did you notice we started out in High Woods and are now living on High Mount?) The damp atmosphere and steep mountains harbored hundreds of different kinds of mushrooms, which Justine and I carefully drew and noted in our mycology journals.

High Mount – Fairy House: In the hollow of a tree, we found a door to the fairy realms. You can see the top half of Justine reappearing after her visit to the inner world. The bottom half is still entangled with the fairies in this photo, but I assure you she did make it back home completely before the day was done.
