Fifty Years of Justine and Susun - Page Two

The Pond at 3136 Fishcreek Road

1979: Quarry pond, summer in the Catskills. Bluestone is a kind of shale; the diamond of shales. And bluestone was dug out of this hole a hundred years before. Nature certainly does a good job of restoring beauty. This pond is over thirty feet deep from the surface of the water to the bottom; and over 60 feet deep from the surface of the land to the bottom.

1979: Duck on the quarry pond, late autumn. We had to get ducks. And they were perfect on the pond. So soothing to watch them. The foxes and raccoons were thrilled with all the fresh meat, alas, so the ducks didn’t last long. We kept getting more, though, because they were so nice to watch.
